For nearly a century, the Chicago Teachers Union has been the most powerful champion for the youth of Chicago, and this week ChiACTS members have been welcomed by the membership of the CTU as SIsters and Brothers one Local to carry the fight forward for the bright futures all our students deserve!
As many of you know, CTU members voted last week on merger with ChiACTS Local 4343. The CTU Rules & Elections Committee certified final election results this evening, with 16,206 CTU members in total voting. Of those, 70.65% voted FOR merger, with 29.35% voting against -- a ratio of support FOR merger of over two to one.
Last June, five of six ChiACTS members in our referendum voted to merge with the CTU, because a stronger union gives us more power to improve our schools, better our profession, and serve our students. The CTU has been a linchpin in the battle to protect public education for ALL of our students, and has supported our efforts to unionize educators who work for charter operators for many years. Our CTU Sisters and Brothers who voted on Thursday know that all classroom teachers deserve a protected voice for students and our students deserve champions in their schools with the power to defend them.
On March 1st, after some legal formalities are addressed, we will be CTU-ACTS. Nothing in the daily operation of defending our members and our contracts, as well as our negotiations for new contracts, will change. However, we have just built power on a historic scale. We are members of the most powerful, member-driven, social justice union the the country. WIth the right supports and opportunities, every student in every classroom in Chicago can accomplish greatness, in the many, varied forms we know success can take. There is now one union for every educator in Chicago to make our schools, our city, and our world better places!
