UNO Charter School teachers, parents, students rally for fair contract as nation's first possible charter school strike looms
“We’re defending great public schools and our students against unnecessary cuts,” say teachers, support staff, who say UNO contract proposal could increase class sizes, hurt classroom conditions.
CHICAGO: The United Educators of UNO (UEU) – the union representing teachers and support staff in Chicago’s 16-school UNO Charter School Network -- has been bargaining with management from UCSN for more than seven months. UEU hopes to avoid a strike -- but management is demanding concessions that threaten workers’ economic security and undermine conditions for students in the classroom, including the potential to increase class size. That scenario is unacceptable to teachers and support staff, who are now taking the steps to strike if necessary to secure a fair contract and minimize the impact of cuts to the classroom.
UEU members will announce the results of their strike authorization vote, along with a possible strike date at the rally. Teachers and support staff have repeatedly said that, while they don't want to strike, they will if they must to protect the quality of education for their students.

What: Leaders will announce status of strike authorization vote at rally calling for a fair contract and protections for classroom conditions.
