Resistance Update

Resistance Update

By, Caroline Hackett

Despite Governor Rauner’s rhetoric, he has yet to support legislation that would make Illinois welcoming to all, and he has zeroed out funding for immigrant and refugee services in his budget proposal.

We set up a petition asking Rauner to back up his rhetoric with action!

Please sign this petition and share widely through your networks!

DON’T KNOW ABOUT THIS PETITION… Below are links to information regarding the legislation.

Illinois Trust Act (HB 3099)

Immigrant Safe Zone Act (HB 0426)

Student Access Bill (HB 2394)

Below is a link to a Sun Times article on what CPS has told it’s principals to do if Immigration and Customs Enforcement attempts to come into Chicago city schools.

The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) has written a resolution to CPS on making Chicago Public Schools sanctuary schools.

Community Activism Law Alliance (CALA) is seeking bilingual volunteers to help translate calls from their immigration helpline (872) 267-CALA (2252). The helpline accepts calls from any immigrant who does not have access to an attorney. The free helpline is available in both English and Spanish every day. Each caller receives a free, confidential immigration screening and legal consultation. Contact Antonio at

Tax March Chicago

Where: Millennium Park, 201 E Randolph St, Chicago, IL
What: Why doesn't the President pay taxes? Where are his tax returns?

Inspired by the last few months of protest, particularly the Women's March, we are going to relentlessly demand the President's taxes. We want to know who he owes money to and what foreign goverments have leverage over us. Above all, FULL disclosure.

This protest has ZERO BARRIERS TO ENTRY. That means whatever cause you celebrate, YOU ARE WELCOME. This includes Democrats, Independents, Republicans and every religion or lack thereof, ethnicity, and gender, orientation, etc.. We are alarmed at Commander-in-Chief Donald Trump's attempt to enrich his family at taxpayer expense.

Take Action

Progressives are using a strategy informed by Indivisible: A Practical Guide for Resisting the Trump Agenda.  This strategy steals Tea Party organizing tactics and focuses on small, local groups taking direct actions to influence their representatives in Washington. Our organizing chair, Caroline Hackett joined her neighborhood Indivisible Group this past weekend and would like to invite you to find your neighborhood group at
Currently there is an effort demanding Town Hall meetings to directly speak with the Illinois Senators and get answers.  To demand these,

Call/fax Durbin and Duckworth to demand Town Hall meetings!
Tammy Duckworth Chicago office: 312-886-3506
Dick Durbin Chicago office:  312-353-4952

UEU is working with UCSN, and other organizations, to create safe spaces for ALL members of our community to come together and learn their rights in the Trump administration. The first of these types of meetings will be held in the Marquez Art Room on February 23rd at 4pm.  If you would like to be a part of this conversation and collaboration e-mail Caroline Hackett.  If you are interested in bringing these types of meetings, or workshops, to your campus reach out to Caroline, your building rep, or your UEU leadership!
Please see below, informational flyers that instruct people on what to do if ICE comes to their door.  This is available in both Spanish and English.
